Hemp stockpiles still hurt prospects
Greg Herriott was nervous two years ago when Canada's hemp acreage surged to six times what it was the year before. Producers, especially those on the Prairies, were clamouring for a chance to grow the crop, hoping it would pay dividends that other crops would not. "A great many people rushed into the industry," said Herriott…

Shelterbelt spawns health bar idea
The decision 10 years ago to plant buffaloberry shelterbelts would eventually lead Morris Johnson to another decision -- how to use the fruit from about 30 kilometres of trees. At the same time, he was delving into the nutraceutical value of foods and looking at how plant chemistries figure into gerontology, anti-aging and, for personal reasons, treatment of diseases. His wife, Arla, has multiple sclerosis....

Hemp Oil Sales in Jeopardy
It took almost a year of persistent selling for Martine Carlina to convince a well-known American lip balm maker to use her company's organic hemp oil instead of a cheaper European variety. But this spring, the Canadian government put a big detour sign in front of Carlina's marketing plans.

Hempseed company scouts future markets
In a province plagued by brain drain, it's refreshing to receive a little injection of grey matter. Saskatchewan's brain gain is courtesy of Jason Freeman, a young entrepreneur from Vancouver who recently moved his hemp business to Regina. The Saskatchewan Hemp Association, the provincial Agri-Food Equity Fund and a hempseed supplier called Gen-X Research Inc. influenced Freeman's decision to relocate.

Where is the Hemp Market Now?
The industrial hemp industry received a lot of attention in the past couple of years. It started out with those in the industry painting a rather rosy picture, and with the media being largely very positive. However, some recent negative events in the industry have brought a lot of scepticism, and the media attention has turned sour as of late.

The HCFR Moves to Regina
The Hemp Commerce & Farming Report (HCFR) has moved its office to Regina, Saskatchewan. This relocation places the Internet trade journal in the heart of Canada's most important agricultural region. "Some of the best opportunities for industrial hemp in Canada are out here in the West," says Arthur Hanks, Editor and Publisher.

Saskatchewan’s Hemp Scene – So Far
The fledgling hemp industry continues to evolve in Saskatchewan. For example, one hemp contractor in the province, Dave Hutcheson of Western Grower Seed in Saskatoon, has recently "opted out" of the hemp business. But Ruth Shamai, now the sole shareholder of R & D Hemp Inc. of Toronto, will continue to establish contracts for hemp seed.

Hempen history (from Canadian Geographic)
By early October, several weeks later than usual -- it had been a funny year for weather -- the killing frosts finally arrived on the prairies and knocked off the lower leaves of the hemp. Sunshine followed the frost, drying the seed heads, which were then ready for harvesting. In went the combines and mowers.

By Al Slinkard, Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan. After numerous delays a permit allowing me to grow a small plot of fiber hemp was granted on June 13, 1995. Seed of three varieties (USO-11, USO-31 and Zolatonysky 13) was obtained from the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences, Institute of Bast Crops, Glukhiv, Ukraine.
